Who Actually Owns Your Client List?

You say the clients are yours. Three questions show whether you could still reach them if your booking app disappeared tonight.

Ask a solo pro who owns their client list and the answer comes back fast: they do, obviously.

Now ask a different question. If your booking app vanished tonight, how many of those clients could you reach tomorrow morning?

That's the real test of ownership. Who you've cut hair for, inked, lashed or groomed for years isn't it. It's whether you can still get a message to them when the app is gone.

Three questions that settle it

1. Do you have their phone numbers somewhere you control? Not "they're in the app." In a file you can open without logging in. A client who books through a marketplace profile can be a name and a face to you and a number you never see.

2. Where do they land when they book? If it's your own link, that's your front door. If it's your profile on a marketplace, with other pros one tap away, you're renting the doorway. Plenty of pros are fine with that trade for the new clients it brings in. Just know it's a trade.

3. What happens to the list if you leave? Some apps make exporting easy. Some bury it. Some tie it to a plan. We haven't checked every app's rules for you, and they change, so this one's worth finding out yourself, today, while you're not mad at anybody.

The 15-minute audit

Do this once and you'll know where you stand.

  • Count. Open your client list. How many have a phone number? How many only have a name?
  • Find the export. Look for it in the app, or search its help center for "export clients." Can't find it? That's your answer for now, and a reason to ask support.
  • Sort by source. Of your last twenty new clients, how many came from the marketplace and how many came from a friend, a post or a DM? The ones who already knew you are yours. They should be booking through your own link.
  • Send your regulars the link. No announcement needed. "Book here from now on" is enough.

Fees on new marketplace clients are a separate question. We broke those down, from each company's own pricing page, in what the big booking apps actually take.

Moving them without losing them

Most pros stay put because switching feels like losing people. It doesn't have to. The clients who matter will follow a short, friendly text. We wrote five of them, for different situations, in the free switch script. There's more on the whole move in how to switch booking apps without losing a client.

Where Morningside fits

Morningside doesn't have a marketplace, so we won't send you new strangers. That's not what it's for.

What it does: your booking page lives at your own link, and you can import the client file you exported from your old app. Imported clients start with texts switched off, so nobody gets a text from you until they opt in on your booking page. After that, the confirmations, the reminders a day and two hours before, and the rebook text after a no-show go to the people who already know you. The page is free, and 20 texts a month are included.

Questions people ask

Who owns your client list on a booking app?

That depends on the app's terms, so read them. A good test: can you export your clients with phone numbers, and could you text them tomorrow without the app? If yes, you hold the list in practice.

Can you take your clients with you when you switch booking apps?

Usually, yes, if the old app lets you export them. Ask support if you can't find the export. Then send your regulars a short text with your new link.

Do you have to tell clients you're switching?

Yes, a short note. Most clients just want the new link and an easy time to book.

Does Morningside import your client list?

Yes. You export a file from your old app and upload it. Imported clients get no texts until they opt in on your booking page.
